As in got freckles, sunspots, age spots, or liver spots? These are signs of skin damage also known as hyperpigmentation.

Hyperpigmentation is the darkening of the skin caused by an overproduction of pigment called melanin.  Melanin is the pigment that gives color to skin, eyes, & hair and acts as the skin’s protective screen from the sun; you’re um-berella. Melanin is produced by skin cells called melanocytes.  As the body ages, melanocyte distribution becomes less controlled by the body.  UV lights stimulate melanocyte activity & where cells are compacted thus; Hyperpigmentation is affected and seen as freckles, sun spots, age spots, & liver spots. The common causes of hyperpigmentation are sun exposure & hormonal changes and could show up anywhere such as the forehead, cheeks, nose, chin, and upper lip area. The worst times are the summer months when the sun is at an all time high.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, 90 percent of women suffer from hyperpigmentation.
