Winter Skincare

Winter Skincare

I remember one of my friends slapping Vaseline on her face in the winter before heading out to the NY streets. The effects of seasonal weather changes, especially during the winter, can take a serious toll on your skin.  Facial skin ravaged by exposure to the elements can exhibit symptoms of dryness, flaking, itching, cracking, and even sore, scaly, patches. Follow my tips during winter weather.

Although it may seem contradictory, dry skin benefits immensely from exfoliation to help rid the flaking dead skin cells, to smooth the skin’s surface and promote cell rejuvenation. Whether you choose a manual or chemical exfoliate like a glycolic acid incorporating the right exfoliate to your routine a few times a week can dramatically improve dry skin.

The skin is typically hydrated after a warm shower or steam. Avoid using the four letter word “soap” or any type of astringents they’ll dry out your skin even more. Instead, use a cleanser and toner, with ingredients that hydrate and calm skin.

Maintaining the skin’s moisture content during the winter months is critical. Seal in moisture with a rich moisturizer that keeps the skin soft while offering protection against the harsh effects of the environment.

For the extremely severe skin symptoms such as cracked and sore skin use a hydrating overnight treatment to provide intensive relief.

Taking a proactive approach to care for your skin during these months will help you avoid skin damage.  If you’re living or vacationing in winter weather adjust your skincare regimen accordingly.

3 Reasons Why You Need Collagen

  1. Slow Down Collagen Breakdown

As we age, collagen production diminishes. It’s estimated that by the time we hit our 40’s, the body has lost approximately 15% of its collagen production causing fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Pump the brakes on those wrinkles and focus on rebuilding collagen.

Parabens possess estrogen-mimicking properties that are associated with increased risk of breast cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin and have been identified in breast cancer tumors.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is a surfactant foaming agent can be found in cleansing products. SLS’s are known to be skin, lung, and eye irritants. A major concern is its potential to interact and combine with other chemicals to form a carcinogen. These combinations can lead to a host of other issues like kidney and respiratory damage.

Hydroquinone is a skin lightener that reduces dark blemishes. Hydroquinone reduces the melanin in your skin to get rid of those brown spots; it irritates your skin and permanently alters your pigment while also weakening the elastin and collagen in your problem area – the very things that are key to keeping your skin firm and youthful!
